NCCU received approval on July 22 from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to establish the College of Informatics. The Department of Computer Science, the Digital Content and Technologies (DCT) Program and the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP), which are now housed in the College of Science, will shift towards the College of Informatics. In the digital era, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data have become global trends. As a result, cross-domain learning and application are now imperative. “We have come a long way to get to where we are today,” Professor Ming-Cheng Kuo, President of NCCU said.

NCCU has been actively planning and preparing to create the College of Informatics for more than ten years. The establishment of the College of Informatics is a new milestone for the university. It features a fusion of information technology and academic consortium of NCCU in the fields of law, humanities and social sciences.

Professor Yuh-Jong Hu, the first Dean of the College of Informatics explained that, apart from the development goals: research, pedagogy and application of information technology, the projects will involve AI, big data analysis, information security, system for mobile communication, IOT (internet of thing), etc. Through collaboration with other subjects, the College of Informatics is dedicated to producing cross-disciplinary talents. Professor Chao-Lin Liu, Chair of the Department of Computer Science, also expressed his enthusiasm towards the establishment of the College of Informatics. He pointed out that the expansion of the pedagogical resources and the cooperation between the colleges at NCCU will bring broader learning opportunities for both faculty and students. Meanwhile, all of these efforts will promote the digital transformation of domestic infrastructure.

Crossing the multiple fields of studies, such as information security, international communication and international finance, Chair Hu added that in the short term, the College of Informatics will provide a master’s program regarding information security and personal information protection by collaborating with the College of Law. Besides, a master’s program in global communication and innovative technology will be offered by collaborating with the International College of Innovation. Additionally, the College of Informatics’ “Bachelor Program in Artificial Intelligence Applications” has also received approval from the MOE this year.

The College of Informatics is devoted to providing interdisciplinary courses for students with non-IT backgrounds and cultivating a new generation who is able to apply information technology knowledge and cross-domain expertise at the same time. It also aims to promote interdisciplinary research and integration among teachers, allowing the knowledge assets of NCCU in the fields of humanities and social sciences to adapt to the digital era. The College of Informatics is looking forward to leading NCCU to realize the vision of digital brainpower and a knowledge economy on a long-term basis.
