NCCU’s New Southbound Future Begins in Thailand, Indonesia, India and Vietnam.
Mutual Support among National Chengchi University’s Four Overseas Offices to Achieve the Brilliant Future of NCCU
As part of its overseas expansion, at the end of 2019, National Chengchi University officially began establishing representative offices in foreign countries beginning with Thailand and Indonesia. And, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, NCCU is actively recruiting students from Vietnam and India through social media campaigns and providing specialized admissions channels to promote awareness of and interest in the unique academic opportunities available at NCCU.
NCCU established its first overseas representative office in Bangkok of Thailand in December 2019, followed by Jakarta of Indonesia. These offices serve to integrate industry, government and academic resources in Taiwan with those in Thailand and Indonesia to actively promote the recruitment of international students for NCCU. These offices played a key role in promoting NCCU’s global expansion during the COVID-19 outbreak, developing the university’s online presence in the local languages of these countries, and representing NCCU at local education fairs. Through online live broadcasts, social media posts and real-time interaction, these offices are the most direct and effective source of information for potential NCCU students, raising awareness of prospective academic and campus life, reviewing application procedures, and providing links to alumni. The Overseas Office in Thailand actively promotes activities for the NCCU alumni community in Thailand, including hosting celebrations for NCCU’s 94th anniversary, along with R.O.C. National Day. The office also produces promotional videos to enhance alumni relations with their alma mater. Under the direction of the two residential representatives, these offices have effectively raised enrollment from Thailand and Indonesia for 2021, with the number of Thai students in the application for admission estimated at three times that of just two years previously, while the number of applications students from Indonesia has doubled.
This push to recruit students from Southeast Asia is well-aligned with the Government’s New Southbound Policy. In the 2020 academic year, Vietnam became the largest source of international students in Taiwan, while the number of students arriving from India has also grown dramatically. Thus, the establishment of representative offices, particularly in Vietnam and India, is a key factor in driving expanded enrollment in the second half of 2021 and for developing new sources of incoming students.
Preparations are currently underway for the establishment of representative offices in Vietnam and India. In July of this year, Ms Do Hanh Nhi, a second-year student from the NCCU International College of Innovation, and Uma Chinnannan, a PhD student in Asia Pacific Studies, were appointed to assist in the establishment of official websites and social media operations in Vietnamese and Hindi. They will also provide real-time one-on-one consultations with prospective students in these countries during the first phase of international student enrollment for the 2022 academic year.
With the active support and assistance of Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Indian alumni and classmates bringing different professional and cultural backgrounds, these overseas representative offices will coordinate and implement NCCU Overseas Office’s annual strategic planning goals and enrollment and publicity priorities. This marks the beginning of a new approach for recruiting students for National Chengchi University, attracting premier talents from around the world to pursue their education at NCCU. In the future, we look forward to working with these local four offices and our alumni to expand recruitment throughout Southeast Asia, unlocking limitless opportunities for academic cooperation and cultural exchange.
